History of Lafayette, CO

The city’s history began when newlyweds Lafayette and Mary Miller made their way across the country’s heartland and settled in the area of Lafayette. In the late 1800s, they began farming on land they attained through the Homestead Act.

The Millers then moved to Boulder in 1874 where Lafayette Miller ran a butcher shop and was the town trustee, and Mary Miller served on the school board. When her husband suddenly died in 1878, Mary decided to move back to their farmland to manage it herself.

Although the farm was successful, Mary set her sights on coal mining. In 1884, a coal vein was found on her property. Three years later, she began her mining enterprise.

A year later in 1888, Mary Miller platted 150 acres of land so a new town could be built around the coal mine. She named the town after her late husband, Lafayette. By July of the same year, the town was thriving – it boasted of new homes and several establishments.

Mary Miller established the Lafayette Bank in 1900. She was elected president, making her the first female bank president in the world. The town was so prosperous that it even had a power station that energized nearby areas like Boulder, Fort Collins, Longmont, and Louisville.
