History of Niwot, CO

The town of Niwot was platted in 1875. It is named after Chief Niwot of the Arapaho tribe. In the Arapaho language, Niwot means “left hand” or “left-handed.”

Chief Niwot played a vital role in Colorado’s history. He was a skilled diplomat and leader who helped usher in an era of development throughout the then-rural town now known as Niwot.

The Colorado Central Railroad also played a significant role in Niwot’s development. After the train tracks were extended northeast, the town’s residents benefited from easier access to the farther Colorado cities. Commerce also grew alongside this development with great success.
