History of Louisville, CO

Louisville started out as a mining town in the late 1800s. It was an expansive coal field found between Boulder and Weld Counties and was originally referred to as the Northern Coal Field.

The town was named after Louis Nawatny, who platted his land back in February 1878. The town became incorporated on June 16, 1882.

The Welch Mine, the first of many in the area, began operations in August 1877. At its peak, there were about 30 mines operating in the area. For example, The Acme Mine in particular produced more than a million tons of coal from 1890 to 1928.

The large mining industry attracted a lot of Europeans to migrate to Louisville. The mix of French, Italian, and other cultures from the Old World is evident in what the community has become today. The Miners Memorial Statue that stands in front of City Hall commemorates the coal miners who played an important part in creating the town.
