History of Longmont, CO

It was in the 1870s when a group of affluent men from Chicago bought around 60,000 acres of barren land in northern Colorado. They turned their sprawling purchase into a new town, which they first named Chicago-Colorado Colony. It was later changed to Longmont, after the neighboring Longs Peak Mountain.

Longmont’s significant railroad activity became a huge part of the town’s history. When the Colorado Central Railroad started its operations in 1877, Longmont’s agricultural industry began to thrive. Workers from Mexico to as far away as Japan moved to Longmont to work its fields.

The 1960s saw the growth of the tech industry. Prominent tech companies such as IBM, Seagate, Maxtor, and Storage Check started to set up shop in and around Longmont.

  • Longmont also provides plenty of outdoor recreation – from hiking in the Rocky Mountain National Park to running a triathlon. Head to the 736-acre Union Reservoir Nature Area if you want to go boating, fishing, camping, windsurfing, and kayaking. Jet skis are not allowed, though. You can also bring your furry friend to the dog off-leash area so they can take a swim.
