History of Niwot, CO
The town of Niwot was platted in 1875. It is named after Chief Niwot of the Arapaho tribe, with Niwot meaning “left hand” in the Arapaho tongue.
Chief Niwot played a vital role in Colorado’s history. The Arapaho leader welcomed the white settlers into their territory, only to be slain during the 1864 Sand Creek Massacre. The perpetrators of the killings were eventually stripped off their positions in government and the military.
The Colorado Central Railroad also played a significant role in Niwot’s development. After the train tracks were extended northeast, the town’s residents benefited from easier access to the farther Colorado cities. Commerce also grew alongside this development.
