It was in the 1870s when a group of affluent men from Chicago bought around 60,000 acres of barren land in northern Colorado. They turned their sprawling purchase into a new town, which they first named Chicago-Colorado Colony. It was later changed to Longmont, after the neighboring Longs Peak Mountain.
Longmont’s significant railroad activity became a huge part of town history. When the Colorado Central Railroad started its operations in 1877, Longmont’s agricultural industry began to thrive. Workers from Mexico to as far away as Japan moved to Longmont to work its fields.
