How to make your new house feel like home on the first few days

Like many people, we may find it hard to settle in whenever moving to a new place. While some easily get comfortable, it’s normal to feel foreign and sometimes a little lonely. Such an episode is quite normal. That feeling of newness is something that may take a few days, weeks, or months to disappear.

Fixing your furniture can get you started, but having a sense of comfort and recognition in your new place may take much more. Here are ideas on how to make your new house feel like home in the first few days.

Unpack, unpack, unpack.

Unpacking is something you have to accomplish anyway, but some folks tend to do it in bits over several days instead of in one go. Doing the former may keep you stranded in the mindset of not really settling in, and is a mess to look at.

Care for a pet.

Indeed, a furry companion always saves the day. If you already have a pet, there’s no doubt that you will quickly settle in your new place. Pets help boost your sense of comfort since they are already familiar to you. However, if you do not own one, consider adopting one in your area. Not only can they make your place cozy, but it helps to have a companion and a little friend to care for as you build a life and routine in a new place.

Display photos and artwork.

Seeing familiar faces in your new house is one of the best ways to dismiss that foreign feeling. Haning photos and artwork can also get your creative juices flowing, apart from helping you establish comfort in your residence.

Do a deep clean.

While this seems like a given, some people may forget to choose to skimp on a thorough cleaning. While a home seller or lessor is likely to turn over a sparkling clean home, it’s always best to do it for your peace of mind and to also give off a sense of rejuvenation and accomplishment. If it’s a new home, cleaning it would be a great way to familiarize yourself with the space and sort of “break it in” for use. If the house is from a past owner, it helps to make sure they didn’t miss a spot before they left! It’s easier to feel comfortable in and proud of your home when you know you’ve put in the work to care for it.

Moreover, unpacking leaves all kinds of mess. You may even find things that you later on realize have no use for anymore. Cleaning the whole house after you move in can speed up your settling process–similar to resting on the bed with freshly washed sheets.

Start from up to down, don’t forget the windows, and vacuum all crevices and carpeted areas. If needed, it may help to put a fresh lining on cupboards and cabinets. Finish off with a scented candle to get rid of the just-moved smell.

Decorate your new home.

One of the best parts of moving is improving your house. If you decorate the place, it would further resonate with your character and make it feel a lot like yours. Need inspiration? Read some of our blogs to get started:
