Cleaning tips to keep your home virus-free

Things have changed significantly ever since the COVID-19 virus put the planet on pause. Masks, hand washing, social distancing, quarantines, and lockdowns – all are part of what we now consider to be the new normal.

That being said, there’s no reason to live in fear if you develop the right sanitary habits. Here is a list of cleaning tips you can follow to keep your home COVID-free:

Learn new habits

When it comes to staying safe, there are a few basic habits you need to start doing. The first habit is staying at home when you can. When you do have to go outside for essential tasks, be sure to keep yourself and others safe by wearing a mask. Imagine you have the virus so it’s easier to practice social distancing at all times. When you get home, the first thing you need to do is to wash your hands thoroughly (for at least 20 seconds). Doing this will greatly decrease the chances of you getting the virus.

Know the difference between cleaning and disinfecting

It’s important to know the difference between these two tasks. Cleaning refers to removing contaminants from a surface. This isn’t enough, however. To deal with the virus, you need to disinfect. Disinfecting is the process of killing pathogens with strong liquids. Transmission of the virus via surfaces is possible, which is why the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recommends cleaning and disinfecting your home regularly.

Pay attention to your home’s high-traffic surfaces

In every home, particular spots get the most action. Every homeowner should know these areas and disinfect them at least once a day. We recommend this because researchers have found that the COVID-19 virus is capable of living on surfaces for up to 24 hours.
Some examples of high-touch surfaces to clean and disinfect daily are faucets, light switches, remote controls, mobile phones, game controllers, kitchen counters, doorknobs, and table surfaces.

Make your own disinfectant

If you find yourself out of disinfectant, you can create your own with common household items. According to the CDC, you can make a bottle of homemade disinfectant spray by mixing 4 teaspoons of bleach to 1 quart of water. Spray this solution on surfaces and let it sit for 10 minutes before wiping it dry.

Even when shops and offices reopen for business, don’t be lulled into a false sense of security. Life may appear as if it’s back to the old normal but the virus is still out there. And we’re still learning a lot about how COVID-19 spreads. So it’s better to be safe than sorry – especially if you live with or come in regular contact with high-risk groups.

Avoid crowded areas and enclosed air-conditioned spaces, if you can. At home, keep practicing good hygiene. Disinfect surfaces on a regular basis or as needed. Close the lid of the toilet before you flush. Have a can of disinfectant in the bathroom so you can spritz taps, toilets, toilet lids and handles, and doorknobs after each use.
