Scenic Bike Trails to Explore in Denver

You will never run out of scenic trails to explore in Denver. From urban pathways to natural tracks, the metro’s diverse trails guarantee adventure at every turn. If you are looking to go biking around Denver, here are some of the best trails the area has to offer.

Platte River Trail

Spanning 28.5 miles by the South Platte River, the Platte River Trail provides a scenic route for hikers and bikers. It passes by many of downtown Denver’s most popular destinations, including Elitch Gardens, the Denver Aquarium, and the Children’s Museum of Denver. Also, the trail features informative signs marking the areas with historical significance to the city. It leads to the Chatfield Reservoir where you can start on other trails, some going all the way to Durango, CO.

Bear Creek Trail

The Bear Creek Trail covers a 14.5-mile stretch from downtown Denver to the foothills of the Rocky Mountains. It will take you to the stunning Red Rocks Park and Amphitheater in the town of Morrison, where you can also visit the Colorado Music Hall of Fame and enjoy breathtaking views of the city. Once there, take the chance to explore the small-town charm of Morrison and its cozy cafés, galleries, and shops.

Cherry Creek Trail

Stretching all the way from Confluence Park to Franktown, this picturesque 40-mile trail is a favorite of Denver locals. It passes through the Cherry Creek Shopping Center, where you’ll find numerous boutiques, restaurants and art galleries. Another interesting stop along the trail is the Four Mile House and Historic Park, where you can learn about the city’s first settlers. The trail ends at the Castlewood Canyon State Park, home to the ruins of the Castlewood Dam, which burst and flooded Denver in 1933.

High Line Canal Trail

Stretching 71 miles from Waterton Canyon to Green Valley Ranch, this designated National Landmark Trail High is one of the longest urban trails in the US. It’s a fairly flat trail that provides a scenic route from Denver to Aurora. The canal was built in the early 1900s to connect the Platte River to Denver and provide irrigation to farmers in the city. The scenic road that runs alongside it became the perfect site for a trail.

Sloan’s Lake Trail

Sloan Lake was created by accident in 1861 when farmer Thomas Sloan attempted to dig a well on the site, which ended up in a flood that quickly grew into a lake. Today, Sloan Lake is the centerpiece of a picturesque park with looping trails perfect for biking, running, or walking your dog. You will also find a number of shops, restaurants, and breweries along the shore.

Washington Park Loop

Denver’s equivalent of New York City’s Central Park, Washington Park is popular among runners, bikers, and anyone who wants to take a break from the city. At 165 acres, it’s one of the largest parks in the metro and includes two lakes, a flower garden, a playground, and plenty of open space to enjoy. Its looping 2.25-mile bike trail goes around the park, providing gorgeous views of green trees and colorful flowers.
